The Fix Is In: AI Is Solving the Riddle of Smarter, Faster Maintenance

It might seem like a cushy job to be the man or woman who works out of the carpeted offices of a power plant, coordinating field service crews who traipse out into the elements to fix, say, an idled wind turbine. But it’s far from elementary. “It’s still a judgment call,” says Scott Berg, chief operating officer of ServiceMax from GE Digital. “Dispatchers probably can’t consider all the historic factors and track record of the

Discovery May Lead to Batteries Charging Faster and Lasting Longer

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory have observed an unexpected phenomenon in lithium-ion batteries, the most common type of battery used to power cell phones and electric cars, creating possibilities to develop batteries that “charge faster and last longer.”

The discovery, published in the newly released journal Science Advances , shows that as a model battery generates electric current, the concentration of lithium inside individual nanoparticles reverses at a certain point, instead of

Applying Kaizen to My Various Websites

I do my best to practice what I preach. I'm not perfect, by any means, but I'm pretty good about practicing the "Kaizen" style of continuous improvement. In this post, I share three recent examples of my Kaizen efforts for LeanBlog.org, JapanLeanTrip.com, and LeanHospitalsBook.com.

Is Your Customer Support Killing Your Business?

By Shep Hyken, contributor

For the past several years I’ve noticed a trend. Customers are smarter than ever before. They know what it’s like to have a good customer service experience. They have learned it from companies like Apple, Amazon and American Express to mention a few CX rock stars—and that’s just a few of the A’s! Even if you don’t compete with them, your customers still expect you to deliver a comparable experience.

That’s right, your

Some iPhone X Owners Are Having Issues With Overheating

Apple has been quite busy juggling its PR image with the controversy over throttled iPhones. As if that was not enough, it is now being reported that its flagship iPhone X is having issues with overheating and excessive data consumption.

As far back as November, websites like Tenorshare and TechoBezz have been offering advice to iPhone X owners on how to keep their devices from overheating. Their recommendations range from forcing a hard reset to disabling

Communication is a contact sport
<!--paging_filter-->

Those of us who care about communication accuracy in the workplace—which should be all of us—cringe at the idea of using something like Facebook or Twitter to communicate with co-workers. We look at how those platforms in particular get abused outside of business and can’t imagine a corporate world where communication is based on, say, 140 characters or a posting free-for-all. So we stick to what we know best—email, instant messaging, and texting—for internal communication.

JI: Training within Industry – Job Instructions

Arguably the most successful module of Training within Industry is Job Instructions, or JI for short. JI has a precise focus on one topic: how to train your workers. The method is very simple and basic but works well. Of course, there are some limitations. “Why?” Not “Who?” Fixing Systems, Not Blaming Workers

Today's post is the first contribution from Shrikant Kalegaonkar, a frequent commenter here on the blog, LinkedIn, and Twitter. We had a chance to meet in Austin last year and I appreciate his shared interests in Lean, statistical process control (ala Deming and Wheeler), and quality improvement. He initiated this piece and I ended up collaborating with him on it. I hope it sparks some healthy discussion...

Fixing Lean’s “Sales” Problem (Tips from a Recovering Salesperson)

When companies begin lean transformations, IT systems too often are
viewed as obstacles. So, some lean thinkers may view Jacob Stoller,
author of The Lean CEO, as having a checkered past. He used to sell IT
systems. But the experience of selling to CEOs gave him a valuable skill
that lean practitioners can borrow: how to sell to senior management.
Here, perhaps as a way of making amends for his pa

The ROI of Having Fun

Daily, weekly, and monthly breaks are an investment with a small upfront cost
<!--paging_filter-->

According to a poll conducted by Harris and the University of Phoenix, 59 percent of American workers wish they were in a different career. For employees in their 30s, that number is right around 73 percent. Employees disliking their jobs may be nothing new, but pushing to make the workday more enjoyable is something employers should take action on. Unfortunately, making the workplace fun simply isn’t a top priority for most employers. They don’t yet realize what they stand to lose.

Fiat Chrysler Recalls 162,000 Minivans Over Glitch That May Cause Stall

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said on Friday it was recalling more than 162,000 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivans because a software glitch may cause the vehicles to stall, Reuters reports.

The Italian-American automaker said one accident had potentially been linked to the defect. Under a rare set of conditions, a vehicle’s engine control module may incorrectly assess the engine’s operating status and cause it to stall, Fiat Chrysler said.

Dealers will update the engine control software, the company

Three Reasons Why Customers Are Not Always Right

Customers don’t always know what they want
<!--paging_filter-->

We all know the famous quote, “The customer is always right.” It was coined more than a century ago. In the United States, it was popularized by Marshall Field during the early 1900s. In the United Kingdom, it was popularized by Harry Gordon Selfridge of luxury retailer Selfridge’s fame. Since then, businesses have used it generously to demonstrate their focus on customers. Don’t we still see CEOs, business owners, and shops proudly displaying this message in their office or place of work?

Fears about an IV bag shortage have come to fruition as medical device manufacturers struggle to return to normal production in Puerto Rico more than three months after Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. territory.
