Nissan Loses ISO Quality Management Certification for Domestic Output

Nissan Motor Co.’s factories in Japan have lost their international quality management certification for domestic production after the carmaker was found to have continued using uncertified workers to conduct final checks on its vehicles even after the problem first surfaced in September, according to certification agencies.

ISO 9001 certificates on quality management systems for Nissan’s six domestic assembly plants were revoked as of Oct. 31 following on-site inspections, the agencies said, raising fears that the credibility

What Do the “The Toyota Way” Books Say About Visual Metrics?

What Do the “The Toyota Way” Books Say About Visual Metrics?

As I've been writing about "process behavior charts" - a simple, yet effective method for charting and reacting to (or not overreacting to) metrics, it's made curious what some of the modern Toyota books say about metrics and performance measures.... or at least the first two in The Toyota Way series.

Walmart Labs Is Brewing Data to Power Walmart’s Future

Walmart Stores, the world’s biggest retailer, is pushing the envelope in technology innovations, which include installing robots at its stores for specific jobs and applying technology for in-home deliveries.

A cornerstone of these innovations is the company’s Walmart Labs in Bengaluru, India, which plays a significant role in helping the retailer stay ahead, Walmart’s chief technology officer Jeremy King told ET’s Mugdha Variyar in an interview in San Francisco. Edited excerpts:

Lean, Leadership, and Employee Engagement at Whirlpool

Lean, Leadership, and Employee Engagement at Whirlpool

I recently read this article on the IndustryWeek website:

Whirlpool's Green Takes Aim at World Class Manufacturing

Byron Green, the vice president of manufacturing for Whirlpool's 14 factories in the U.S. and Mexico, said:

"...manufacturing was littered with companies that saw lean as a collection of tools that could be deployed for a quick win. Successful companies, he said, instead see it as a bedrock of their culture."....

Subaru to Expand Inspection-Related Recall to About 400,000 Units in Japan

Subaru plans to add about 145,000 vehicles to its inspection-related recall in Japan, according to a report by Reuters . The automaker had previously estimated that nearly 255,000 vehicles would be recalled after uncertified workers were found to have carried out final car inspections. The recall is expected to start next week.

Significance: The latest announcement by Subaru widening the scope of the recall is part of a precautionary move. In its previous announcement, Subaru said that

How to Make Your Point and Be Heard

Seven tips to say it quick and make it stick
<!--paging_filter-->

It’s quite frustrating to be not heard when you speak up, and unfortunately, it’s more common than you might think.

Speaking up in a group setting is one of the biggest challenges many people face. You have some valuable information and opinions to share, but no one listens to you. It can be hard enough to find something worthwhile to contribute, and when your contribution isn’t even noticed, it can be demoralizing.

How Autonomous Vehicles Will Challenge Traditional Supply Chains

While most players in the automotive industry believe that autonomous cars, with varying degrees of autonomy, will soon see the light of day, a study by McKinsey & Company indicates that only up to 15% of new cars will be autonomous by 2030. For decades to come, then, automakers will be producing both autonomous and traditional cars simultaneously.

This dual production won’t seem like a significant issue until people realize how fundamentally different autonomous vehicles are.

Podcast #292 – The Co-Authors of “Motivational Interviewing for Leadership”

Today, our topic is something that I've really taken an interest in the past two years: "Motivational Interviewing." See my past blog posts on this subject. I think it's a powerful methodology that will help anybody in their Lean transformation efforts... as well as our work engaging anybody in a small improvement.

"Motivational Interviewing" or M.I. is defined by Miller and Rollnick (in their seminal book) as a:

“collaborative conversation for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change”

My guests for Episode 292 are the three co-authors of an excellent book, Motivational Interviewing for Leadership: MI-LEAD. They are (pictured from left to right in this order):

Jason Wilcox, Director of Education and Connected Care at VA Roseburg
Dr. Brian Kersh, Clinical Psychologist at New Mexico VA Health System
Dr. Elizabeth Jenkins, Clinical Psychologist/Courtesy Assistant Professor at University of South Florida

According to Business Insider , the listeria was discovered several weeks ago at a Gate Gourmet catering facility where the airline’s in-flight meals are prepared.

Kobe Steel Blames Data Scandal on Focus on Profit, Lack of Controls

Kobe Steel Ltd said on Friday a lack of quality controls and a focus on profits was behind the widespread data tampering that has shaken up the supply chains of car and plane makers around the world.

Japan’s third-largest steelmaker, which has posted losses in the last two business years, promised to automate more of its operations and reorganize its quality control systems to recover from one of the nation’s biggest corporate scandals.

Should #Lean Conferences Add a “Code of Conduct” for Speakers and Attendees?

In today's post, I pose a question: Should the major Lean conferences adopt or adapt a practice that's now common at tech events, including Agile and Lean Startup events: a "Code of Conduct" for participants and attendees. Is this a countermeasure to a problem that doesn't exist in the Lean community? Or, is it still good to proactively encourage people to speak up to conference organizers if they are subject to bad behavior during the event? In this post, I get feedback and thoughts from the Lean Enterprise Institute, AME, Catalysis, Lean Frontiers, and the Shingo Institute.
