Podcast #286 – Dean Gruner, MD on ThedaCare’s #Lean Journey

My guest for Episode #286 is Dean Gruner, MD, the recently retired CEO of ThedaCare, a health system in Wisconsin that has long been considered a worldwide leader in the practice of Lean in healthcare. See this article about his retirement, where he says "I've gotten more than I've given."

Dean was previously my guest in Episodes 119 and 144 and I'm thrilled that he took time out of his retirement to talk with me about his lessons learned as he looks back on how ThedaCare's Lean journey has evolved, including some things he would consider to be missteps and challenges that they used as a springboard to get even better.

I will also be releasing a separate episode where Dean talks about their experiences with Accountable Care Organizations (our topic from #144) and other "big picture" healthcare issues of the day.

I'm including a full transcript along with a three-page PDF summary, as I've been doing recently.

Tesla Boosts Car Battery Power During Irma, Raising Questions of Control

Tesla drivers in Florida got an unexpected assist this weekend as they scrambled to evade Hurricane Irma.

Owners of certain Model S sedans and Model X SUVs noticed that the battery capacity of their electric cars had increased, giving them as much as 40 extra miles of range to outrun the deluge. Range anxiety—the fear that an electric vehicle will run out of charge before reaching its destination—can be magnified in emergency situations.

Tesla confirmed that it

Ride-hailing start-up Lyft may soon be picking up passengers in self-driving cars owned and powered by tech start-up Drive.ai, the two companies announced Thursday.

When the program starts around Drive.ai’s Mountain View headquarters, about 10 cars outfitted with the company’s sensors and software will become a part of Lyft’s free self-driving service, although passengers who are assigned an autonomous Lyft can opt out.

Canada’s Immigration Department Tries Out a New Concept—Customer Service

What began as a friendly challenge between immigration officials and university students has brought on a fundamental shift in how the Immigration Department deals with applicants.

For example, now when people contact the department’s Montreal-based client support center for help, the first thing they hear is no longer a warning that disgruntled callers should not verbally abuse the agent.

People also won’t be brushed away quickly for their questions simply because their application has not reached the

Airplane Food: Flight Attendant Kaizen or a Violation of Standardized Work?

Today’s blog post is about airplane food. It’s not about the quality of airplane food… it’s not an SNL Seinfeld-ish “what’s the deal with airplane food?” rant, if you remember that classic sketch.

As I’ve sometimes blogged about, I fly American Airlines quite often and I’ve gained Executive Platinum frequent flyer status. I’m grateful that the status means I get upgraded about 90% of the time.

I’m always fascinated by the variation in service provided by flight attendants in first class.
